Have the holidays got you making to-do lists for your to-do lists? Incorporating a quick meditation exercise into your day can help you enjoy the season by taking a few minutes to stop do-ing and start be-ing.
Put simply, meditation is an emptying or concentration of mind on one thing in order to aid mental or spiritual development, contemplation, or relaxation. And who couldn’t use a little of that during this hectic time of year! Start with a goal of 5 minutes per day and increase as desired.
To begin, start by bringing all of your awareness and attention to your heart. As you do, imagine breathing deeply, in and out, from your heart. Notice how your chest expands and contracts by placing your hand over your heart as you inhale and exhale. Imagine that as your heart is pumping healthy blood throughout your body, it is also radiating energy through your whole being.
Practice heart breathing throughout the day or before your drift off to sleep in the evening.
My ‘Live Well, Stress Less’ seminar students at Looma Spa love this exercise as it provides a deep sense of relaxation in minutes.
Why it works
Adapted from the work of the HeartMath Institute, this exercise is designed to entrain your brain into a coherent and more relaxed brain-wave state. The heart is the strongest emitter of electromagnetic energy in the body and sends information to the brain in a variety of ways: electromagnetically, which is how EKGs work; through the pulse, which sends information through a blood pressure wave; and biochemically, through releasing atrial peptide, a hormone that inhibits other stress hormones.

Our newest workshop series, Introduction to Meditation: Learn the Art, Master the Craft lead by Integrative Life Coach, Charyl DeVoe-Nietfeld, begins in January. If you are looking to learn easy techniques to incorporate relaxation into your daily ritual or wanting to begin or enhance your meditation practice, this course is for you.
Introduction to Meditation: Learn the Art, Master the Craft (60 mins)
If you have always wanted to learn to meditate, would like to learn more or expand your current practice, you will find this group welcoming. The benefits of meditation on mind, body and spirit are life changing; however learning how to meditate and making it a part of your daily regimen can be challenging. While the most famous yogi’s and spiritual leaders assert to meditating 2+ hours per day, a mere 10 minutes can have the same effect. In this course, we will be discussing the elements of meditation and engaging in 30 minutes of guided group practice followed by Q&A/experience sharing at the discretion of the participants. Take the time to center yourself and feel the enhanced energy that group meditation provides. (maximum 8 people)
What is guided meditation?
Guided meditation is simply “meditation with the help of a guide”. It’s one of the easiest ways to enter into a state of deep relaxation and inner stillness, and it’s one of the most powerful ways to eliminate stress and bring about positive personal changes. Integrative Life Coach, Charyl DeVoe leads this inspiring course offering participants a practical approach to integrating meditation and wellness into busy lives.
